Susie Martin, a proud member of the Alts’e’Tnaey (One way or Single minded) Clan, hails from Mentasta Lake. Born to the late Karl Martin Jr. and Kathryn Martin, her familial roots run deep, with her maternal grandparents being the late Ray Dale and Eva John, and her paternal grandparents being the late Ray and the late Marie Dennis. Martin’s upbringing and cultural heritage have shaped her into a dedicated leader and compassionate community member, embodying the values of tradition and resilience. Her commitment to her community shines through her roles as both First Chief at Mentasta Traditional Council and as a dedicated Community Health Aide for Copper River Native Association (CRNA).
As the First Chief at Mentasta Traditional Council, Martin carries the weight of responsibility with grace and determination. In her role, she wears multiple hats, including conducting monthly council meetings, supervising the Tribal Administrator and all Tribal Council programs, and serving as a Tribal Judge for the tribal court. Martin’s journey to this esteemed position began with her service as Second Chief for four years, during which she honed her skills and deepened her understanding of tribal governance.
“I want the best for all of our tribal members,” Martin says, reflecting on her motivation to serve. Her dedication to the well-being of her community is palpable, driving her to seek continuous growth and knowledge in her position.
In her role as a Community Health Aide for CRNA, Martin extends her compassionate service to the healthcare sector. Working tirelessly to provide health care for residents at the Mentasta clinic, Martin’s responsibilities include office management, schedule appointments and medical travel, medical labs, responding to emergencies, and acute/chronic/preventative care for patients.
“I’ve always loved to take care of others and help people,” Martin shares, highlighting her innate passion for serving her community’s health needs. Her aspiration to become a Community Health Aide Practitioner underscores her commitment to furthering her career in the health field.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Martin finds joy in various hobbies and interests. A skilled beadworker, she finds solace in crafting new projects. She also enjoys reading, solving puzzles, and indulging in her love for fishing and berry picking. However, her greatest joy lies in spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews, strengthening the bonds of kinship that are central to her culture.
