Ahtna’s HOPE Programs Boost Shareholder Success

Ahtna’s HOPE (Helping Our People Excel) Shareholder Program is an initiative designed to foster growth and success among its shareholders. With a strong commitment to enhancing the overall well-being of Ahtna shareholders, this program emphasizes sustained growth and community support.

In 2019, the Ahtna Board of Directors introduced the HOPE Shareholder Program. The primary objective of HOPE is to increase shareholder employment and provide valuable work experience. This initiative underscores the corporation’s dedication to investing in its people and prioritizing their ability to secure full-time employment. The Shareholder Enrichment team works closely with Ahtna subsidiaries and management to create opportunities, increase shareholder hires, and develop programs that drive career advancement.

Initiatives Under the HOPE Program

The HOPE Program offers a variety of initiatives aimed at helping shareholders achieve their career goals:

  • Ahtna Summer Internship Program: An intensive internship designed to provide hands-on experience, preparing students for successful employment within the Ahtna family of companies.
  • National Park Intern Program: Open to high school juniors and young adults up to 30 years old, this program offers a blend of cultural education and professional development at Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.
  • Walter Charley Memorial Scholarship: Provides financial support for higher education, with awards up to $4,000 for undergraduate students and $6,000 for graduate students. The program also includes the Ahtna Natural Resources Scholarship for those interested in land management.
  • Ahtna Vocational Scholarship Program: Offers up to $12,000 for tuition to shareholders pursuing vocational education. In 2023, this scholarship supported 22 shareholders in fields such as CDL and HVAC training.
  • Ahtna Certificate Scholarship: Provides an opportunity for Ahtna shareholders eager to deepen their expertise and secure their future in specialized fields with awards up to $2,000 for each application. The Ahtna Certificate Scholarship is tailored for those pursuing occupational endorsements, providing a unique pathway to professional growth and cultural enrichment.
  • Career Assistance Program: Provides financial assistance for pre-employment preparation, job improvement, and training. This includes help with obtaining legal documents, union membership dues, licensing, and education expenses.
  • Apprenticeship Programs: Assists shareholders in finding and applying for apprenticeship opportunities in skilled trades, offering a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience.
  • Resume & Interview Coaching: Offers resume review services and interview skills coaching to help shareholders present themselves professionally in the job market. In 2023, 64 shareholders received assistance with resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles.
