Vocational Scholarship Highlight: Robert Leonard Jr.
Robert Leonard Jr. took advantage of the Vocational Scholarship to assist with his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training through Alaska Driving Academy. Robert is the son of Robert Charles Leonard Sr. and Gertrude Bartman and the grandson of Melvin Leonard Sr and Maggie Eupharenia. He grew up in Palmer and currently resides in Wasilla.
Robert raved about the scholarship program helping him to get ahead of his training goals and obtain a promotion. Working for Big Green Trucking has offered him the opportunity to understand his current job better and improved his performance.
“If you have the opportunity, I recommend getting ahead of it and applying for the scholarship and going for it!”
Robert also highly recommends Alaska Driving Academy (ADA). “They do a great job training, and the environment is a family-like experience. They do a great hands-on training with us! I was awarded ‘Most Improved!’,” he shared.
CDL Training
Getting a CDL can open a world of employment opportunities and is not limited to truck driving. An abundance of job positions require a CDL. You need one if you want to work as a school bus driver, city bus driver, tour bus driver, hazmat carrier, ice road driver, or sanitation worker. It’s smart to get CDL training if you’re planning on a career as a heavy equipment operator. Many heavy equipment operator jobs require the applicant to be skilled at operating multiple types of vehicles, including ones that require a CDL.

Many shareholders have successfully completed the ADA training with financial assistance from Ahtna’s Vocational Scholarship Program. ADA boasts an impressive graduation rate of 98% and job placement rate of 96%. The ADA program is recognized by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) and is based on the standards set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for Entry Level Driver Training requirements. PTDI is a nationally recognized and highly respected standard in the trucking industry. Training consists of classroom instruction, demonstrations, hands-on basic maintenance, off road maneuvers, and on-the-road driving. Training is offered monthly.
